LEADERSHIP SUCCESSION
PM Lee: We now have the core team for the next generation in Cabinet. But Minister or not, all of us are mortal. Minister Heng Swee Keat recently gave us a bad scare. I am very glad that he pulled through, and is steadily recovering. Doctors have given him the go-ahead to do office work, with minimum interaction.
I have therefore decided that Swee Keat will resume duties as Minister for Finance. DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam will stop covering as Acting Minister. Swee Keat will focus on next year’s Budget and CFE, and I will appoint Lawrence Wong as 2nd Minister to help him out with the operational responsibilities duties for MOF.
Building up leadership and preparing for succession is the top priority. Nothing that has happened has changed my timetable, or my resolve to press on with succession. In the next GE, we will reinforce the team again. Soon after the next GE, my successor must be ready to take over from me. 岁月不留人
